For chronic sleep deprivation, the conversation isn't about cravings. It's about:

  • Sleep environment (cool, dark, quiet, no screens 60+ min before bed)
  • Consistent timing (same sleep and wake times daily, including weekends)
  • Stress management (the most-cited cause of sleep difficulty in adults)
  • Possible sleep disorders (sleep apnea, insomnia, restless legs — see a sleep specialist)
  • Caffeine and alcohol patterns (both disrupt sleep more than people recognize)

For athletes specifically, sleep is non-negotiable for training and body composition outcomes. If you can't get 7+ hours nightly, the rest of your training and nutrition work is partially undermined.

What this means for tracking

If you're tracking macros and your cravings are out of control on certain days:

Look at the previous night's sleep. If it was under 6 hours, the cravings are probably hormonal. Adjust the day's calorie target up to maintenance.

Don't push the deficit on bad-sleep days. The math will catch up over the week.

Don't blame yourself for biology. Restoring sleep restores normal hunger signaling. The cravings resolve.
